Balancing caring responsibilities with your job search

Did you know, 82% of managers are “accidental managers”?

Current research shows that 82% of managers are “accidental managers”.  These are people that become managers with no experience or qualifications.

The research also finds that 67% of people have left, or would leave, a job because of bad management.

Are you a manager who has been promoted without training and the necessary skills?

Or perhaps you are amongst those who have left, or are looking to leave, a job because of poor management?

From our experience, companies who embrace a culture of learning and development, creating a safe environment for managers to progress, whilst leading by example and ensuring that good practice is led from the top, are the companies who retain staff and develop people into management roles.

Although internal development and promotion is good for business, the rise in accidental managers can cause many issues for businesses, including –

  • Inconsistent management
  • Lack of confidence to deal with difficult issues and manage teams
  • Failure to implement and develop a positive culture
  • Lack of trust and confidence in management from the workforce
  • Uncompliant management with legislation and requirements
  • Failure to provide training and development opportunities

Perhaps your job search has been instigated by the need to leave an organisation where you are not supported to develop. Some signs of a company who promote a healthy management culture can include-

  • Regular appraisals and one to ones
  • Coaching
  • Providing feedback, or encouraging managers to request feedback from their colleagues/teams
  • Succession planning activities – clear goals and expectations to work towards
  • Buddying or mentoring schemes
  • Training
  • Behaviour profiling

DISC behaviour profiling can be an excellent way to understand your own, and other’s behaviour better.  Understanding your own behaviour profiles can be invaluable in your job search, identifying how you like to work, how you respond to requirements, and how you can work with different individuals.  Please contact us on tracey@cvprime.co.uk if you would like to discuss how behaviour profiling can be useful for your own career and job search.
